The Sam books are intended to be a stepping stone for early readers. Each edition has elements emphasizing phonological awareness, which is the child’s awareness of the sound structure of words. Phonological awareness is key to eventual reading ability. One factor generally accepted to enhance phonological awareness is rhyming. Once a child learns how to hear, recognize, and play with words, they are on their way to becoming a reader!
